1. Who We Are
SmartPaper is operated by Sagar Jilka ("we", "us", "our"). If you have any questions about this policy, please contact us at jilka.labs@gmail.com.
We are committed to protecting your personal data and handling it in accordance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
2. What SmartPaper Does
SmartPaper is a mobile application that allows parents and guardians to generate AI-powered Maths and English practice papers for primary school children (Years 2–6). Parents create an account, add a child profile, and generate papers tailored to the child's year group. The app provides AI feedback on incorrect answers and tracks progress over time.
3. Information We Collect
3a. Information You Provide
- Account information: your email address and display name when you register.
- Child profiles: a first name (you don't have to use a real name) and school year group (e.g. Year 3) for each child you add. We do not collect a child's surname, date of birth, school name, or any other identifying information.
- Usage data: papers generated, questions answered, scores, and topic performance — used to power progress tracking and the "focus on weak areas" feature.
3b. Information Collected Automatically
- Analytics: anonymised usage events (e.g. "paper generated", "feedback viewed") collected via PostHog to help us understand how the app is used and improve it. No personally identifiable information is included in these events.
- Device information: standard app platform data (OS version, device type) collected by Expo/EAS for crash reporting and build management.
4. How We Use Your Information
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Creating and managing your account | Contract performance |
| Generating AI practice papers and feedback | Contract performance |
| Tracking a child's topic progress | Contract performance / Legitimate interests |
| Sending a welcome email and optional weekly practice reminders | Legitimate interests (you can unsubscribe at any time) |
| Improving the app via anonymised analytics | Legitimate interests |
| Complying with legal obligations | Legal obligation |
5. Children's Data
SmartPaper is designed for use by parents and guardians, not directly by children. The account holder (the adult) is responsible for all data entered into the app. Child profiles contain only a first name and school year group — no contact details, location data, or other sensitive information about a child is collected.
We do not knowingly allow children under 13 to create accounts. If you believe a child has created an account directly, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
6. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate SmartPaper:
| Service | Purpose | Data shared |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase (EU region) | Database, authentication, and backend functions | Account data, child profiles, question responses |
| Anthropic (Claude API) | AI generation of practice questions and feedback | Question content and child's answer (no personal data) |
| Resend | Transactional email delivery | Your email address and name |
| PostHog (EU region) | Anonymised product analytics | Anonymised usage events, no personal data |
| Expo / EAS | App build and distribution | App bundle only, no user data |
| Google Play | App distribution on Android | Subject to Google's own privacy policy |
We do not sell your personal data to third parties and never will.
7. Data Retention
- Your account and all associated data is retained for as long as you have an active account.
- If you delete your account, all your data (including child profiles and question history) is deleted within 30 days.
- Anonymised analytics data may be retained indefinitely as it cannot be linked back to you.
8. Your Rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate data.
- Erase your data ("right to be forgotten").
- Restrict processing of your data.
- Data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format.
- Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.
To exercise any of these rights, please email sagarjilka@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
9. Email Communications
We send a welcome email when you register and may send a weekly reminder if your child has not practised that week. You can unsubscribe from reminder emails at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us directly. We will never send marketing emails from third parties.
10. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), row-level security policies on our database, and restricted access to production systems. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security but we take it seriously.
11. Cookies and Local Storage
SmartPaper is a mobile app and does not use browser cookies. We use device secure storage (Expo SecureStore) to keep you logged in between sessions. This data is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you via email or an in-app notice before the change takes effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
